Unit 1: Who We Are

Central Idea: My choices make me who I am

Teaching young kids is a challenging task for me. As teachers, we need more than energy to handle young minds. We need to create a learning space that can spark their curiosity.

As a Grade 1 homeroom teacher, I created activities in and out of the classroom that foster creativity and curiosity.

In this eggshell experiment, the kids learned that drinking too much sugar from soft drinks and juices can affect their dental health.

The students designed their own healthy meals. We also brought healthy snacks to the park. In this way, we taught them how to prepare a healthy meal and emphasized the importance of active movement, like playing outside.

To encourage students to practice healthy habits at home—such as going to bed early, brushing their teeth, and eating healthy meals. We invited our school nurse to explain the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Aside from learning healthy habits and preparing a healthy meal, our students also learn some Kung Fu poses from our MYP PE teacher.

Reflection:
This unit taught me to plan activities and lessons that encourage students to use their prior knowledge and build new ones. Through various activities that I introduced to students, they became engaged and learned the value of teamwork.
